I recently purchased the Galvan Grip 12wt reel for a tarpon trip to Cuba. I've been on numerous bonefish trips to Florida and the Bahamas, but this was going to be my first hunt for huge tarpon. I didn't want to spend $800-900 for a reel that likely won't see too much use so I decided on the well reviewed Grip.
I must say that I was not disappointed at all! The industry reviewers are not kidding when they say that this reel has one of the best drag mechanisms out there!!! Very smooth operation at all ranges of drag, even full-on. The drag adjustment knob was much easier to operate than my Nautilus NV-G8 (theirs is a little too small in diameter and hard to grab on to with wet fingers) and it had a much broader range of pressure control than the NV-G or my Hatch Finatic 7 Plus. The reel appears to be very well made although not quite as pretty as the Hatch or Nautilus. I've matched this with a Sage One 12wt rod and a SA Tarpon taper WF-12f line. Perfect set-up for me! I've VERY impressed with the quality and value of the Galvin Grip reel. You won't be disappointed!
