Rogue River Summer Steelhead

Summer Steelhead enter the Rogue River starting in July, with the peak of the run coming September through mid November. Beginning in mid September the Spring Chinook begin spawning in the Upper Rogue with the early Summer Steelhead sitting behind them eating eggs. From mid September on Summer Steelhead are readily available in the Middle Rogue as well. Around the first week of October Fall Chinook begin spawning in the riffles by the thousand. As they dig their redds they dislodge insects from the gravel, creating feeding lanes below them. A nymph pattern presented on a dead drift works very well. As the Chinooks begin to spawn the Steelhead begin to feed on eggs more readily. dead drifting nymphs and eggs is very effective, but not the only method of catching fish. Mornings and evenings a Green-Butt Skunk on a dry line can provide jolting strikes. Summer Steelhead average 4-5lbs with double digit fish common.
