Applegate Winter Steelhead

The Applegate River is a tributary of the Rogue River, it enters the Rogue just below the town of Grants Pass. It opens for Steelhead fishing On January 1st. In the early season, the best fishing is found high in the system for late Summer Steelhead. Winter Steelhead enter the river starting in January but fishing is spotty through mid February. Best fishing is often had as the water clears and drops from Winter storms. In late February and throughout the month of March fish are readily available with, with the last two weeks of March being the hottest. Weighted nymph and egg patterns fished in holding water can be deadly. A nine and a half foot seven or eight weight rods with a long belly Steelhead taper floating line works best.
